Four courses, from the rules to past 2000

The courses follow one path, and you can start at the level that fits you. Inside each course the lessons come in order, so you always know what to do next.

What the lessons are made of

The lessons mix several kinds, and the later courses add more:

• A short piece of theory, with the idea on a board, not a wall of text.
• Puzzles on that idea, so you use it straight away.
• Openings to learn along the way, a little at a time.
• Endgames, from the Intermediate course on, played against the engine.
• Games against bots to put the idea to work. Win for all three stars.

In the Intermediate and Advanced courses, some sections open after you play an online game against another person.

Why a course and not just puzzles

Puzzles train what you already know. When you are starting out, the hard part is knowing what to learn and in what order: the checkmates before the openings, the basic endgames before the long plans. A course puts that order in front of you and lets you go at your own pace.

What is free

The whole First Steps course is free, and so are playing against the bots and the engine review of your games. In the other courses you can try the first lessons for free; the rest is Premium.
